The school I usually teach at is closed this week so I’m filling in at another kindergarten. Much to my surprise this school is located inside a monastery.
Each morning I pass beneath the towering, red and golden archway into a thickly wooded area with a small clearing, in the middle of which sits a beautiful red and golden temple.
When the kids arrive they are greeted by the monks, each of whom they wai (hands together to the head with a slight bow). The school day begins with the monks leading the children in a 10 minute meditation before they go to kindergarten. I’m jealous that these little kids have such a mentally peaceful start to each day and wonder if it will have an effect on their personalities as adults. For now, I’m thankful just to join them in their wonderfully tranquil little piece of Thailand.
