We don’t cook here. We did cook-in one time, out of excitement when we moved into our apartment and finally had a stove again. In four months, that was the only meal we’ve prepared.
When $1.30 buys a fantastic meal, you eat out a lot. And when you don’t want to eat out that night, you ask your local lunch spot to make you a “take away” meal. Back in the states such a meal would be provided in a plastic or cardboard box. From a local Thai restaurant though, you may get your “take away” in a leaf:
As a footnote, I am aware that the chicken and rice within the leaf looks boring. But it comes with sauces. Really, really good sauces.
Many restaurants have up to four or five sauces on the table. One or two will be spicy while another is sweet. In one of my favorite places we mix three sauces in a bowl before drizzling it over the chicken. It’s a very original flavor that has made it a hot spot for local Thais. The only sauce we always ignore is fish sauce. Eck.
