I waited four very long months for this moment. Week after week I dreamed of eating a bagel with cream cheese. Since moving to Thailand it’s all I’ve wanted but, unfortunately, a bagel is hard to come by on this island. If you do find a bagel you will most likely not be able to put the cream cheese your used to on it. On the shelf of the island’s high end grocery store there is a Philadelphia tub filled with something labeled “cream cheese” but more resembling plain butter.
When we booked our five day vacation (vacation-vacation?) to Singapore, it was to explore one of the world’s most modern cities and to get a bagel.
In Singapore nothing is cheap and this little shop only offered a lox and caper bagel for $13 plus lots of Singapore taxes. That’s enough moola to pay for at least five full meals in Thailand, but this bagel had real cream cheese, capers, sliced red onions, sliced salmon, and a green salad on the side. Honestly I was more excited about this bagel than actually being in Singapore at that moment.
