Teaching is harder than expected. <– Understatement of the year
Here’s something I never expected, rulers and erasers are the worst. How much time I spend every day taking away rulers is getting insane. Rulers are:
- Tapping and drumming devices
- Sword fighting devices
- Eraser chopping devices
- Rubber band slingshots
Rulers are only the start. Weird drink mixes, pencil boxes, pretty much anything can become a distraction. Kids are like little inmates, infinitely resourceful in ways to entertain themselves.
Plus there are notes, drawings, toy cars, candy, rubber band guns, and even air-soft guns to confiscate.
Teaching also takes x10 more time than I ever expected. I used to think teachers had it easy, getting out at 3:30 everyday and summers off. Now I can only imagine what a teacher back in the US goes through.
I plan 20 lessons a week, teach 20 lessons, create worksheets, grade worksheets, create tests, grade tests, choose bookwork to use, grade bookwork, and I just found out I’m supposed to grade my students notes. Considering I have 70 kids and they take notes 1-2 times a week, ugh!
It also takes an enormous amount of effort to try to control the classroom in the first place. This means buying prizes for good kids, trying to come up with fun ways to learn, and staying late or forfeiting my lunch hour to have kids in for detention when they won’t behave.
There are moments of victory, when the kids get it, and moments of failure when they stare at me like I’m speaking Latin. If I knew Latin, I might speak it now and then just to see if they’d notice.
It’s a little hard knowing what to make of it all. Every blog we read before coming here stated that teaching full time in Thailand would be a 3-4 hour a day gig and that you could come and go as you please between classes. Instead I find I barely have time to eat in my 7:30am – 3:45pm workday.
For now, I’m going to keep chuggin’. A lot of my students are pretty awesome, which makes it seem like it’s not for nothing. Maybe I’ll seek support by going back to the store and buying pencil pouch I saw when looking for prizes:
