Our Story

  1. Hi,

I will be moving to Phuket from NYC on April 15th to take the 4 week TEFL course at Tefl Campus.

I just want to start by saying thank you. Your site has been a tremendous help and I’ve been referencing it almost every day now as I begin to prepare for my journey. It is absolutely amazing that you two have done this and I hope one day to thank you in person.

Is Tefl Campus the school you two attended for your certification? I believe that’s where I found your site, but I honestly can’t remember at this point. If so, I was wondering how helpful the school was with helping you find a job. How long did it take you to secure a job following the course? Do you think I will have trouble finding a job with the course ending in mid-May once the school year has started? Any advice or thoughts you have to offer would be greatly appreciated!

    Thank you!

    My best,
    Laura

    1. Laura, thanks for letting us know our site has been helpful! It’s very rewarding to hear that.

To answer your question, we took the TEFL course in Phuket Town with Eric Haeg. He and his team provide great job search support. The key word is support. They will not hand you a job. Said differently, they will not place you in a school. They will help you rewrite your resume, give you leads, and application and interview advice.

It took about three weeks to find full time work and only a week to find part time tutoring work. Honestly, yes finishing the course after the year starts is a disadvantage. There is, however, lots of demand for tutors right now.

Check out schools like “PALs”, “Brainy House”, and “ECC”. They are just a few of the dozens of language schools who do after school tutoring. They generally pay 300-350 baht an hour. Don’t bother reaching out in advanced though. Working here is very much a “walk in to apply” kind of environment. Too many people change plans at the last minute for language school to bother setting up jobs via email before a teacher arrives.

I hope this helps. Please do not hesitate to ask follow up questions if I failed to address anything you’re wondering about. Otherwise, good luck and drop us a line when you arrive!
